Stop sticks, also known as tire deflation devices, are designed to safely stop fleeing vehicles during high-speed pursuits. When deployed, stop sticks puncture the tires of a vehicle, gradually deflating them and bringing the vehicle to a halt without the need for high-risk, high-speed chases. This method significantly reduces the danger posed to officers, bystanders, and the general public by preventing high-speed crashes that could result in serious injuries or fatalities.

Commander Abel Ortiz expressed his gratitude for the generous grant, stating, “We are truly thankful to First Responders Benefit for this funding, which will allow us to enhance our pursuit management strategies. Stop sticks provide a safe and effective way to terminate high-speed pursuits, reducing the risk to our officers and the public, while ensuring we can still safely apprehend suspects.”

The grant award of $1,500 will go toward the purchase of additional stop sticks, which will be distributed among patrol vehicles to ensure that deputies are fully equipped when responding to dangerous high-speed incidents.

Ashlee Carlgren and Kaylyn Galvin of First Responders Benefit shared their enthusiasm about the grant, noting, “Supporting the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and other first responders is at the heart of our mission. We recognize the importance of providing our law enforcement officers with the tools they need to protect themselves and the community, and we are proud to assist in making that happen.”

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office continues to prioritize the safety of its deputies and the public through the use of advanced law enforcement tools and strategies. With the addition of stop sticks, the department aims to reduce the risks associated with high-speed pursuits, making roads safer for everyone in Lyon County.
